Course Overview
This intensive Engine Room Simulator Management Level course (MEO Class I) combines short theory sessions with extensive simulator practice to prepare engineers for real-world propulsion decisions and safe operation of main diesel engines. Over 3 days (total 18 hours) trainees work through plant familiarisation, instrumentation & controls, alarm/monitoring systems, performance assessment, and heavy-weather scenarios. The course also features a computer-based combustion-gas simulation module dedicated to finding the best SFOC for a given engine load and fuel grade. Assessment is carried out at course end. Quality standards align with DG Shipping training guidance (Training Circular 31/2018).

The Engine Room Simulator Management Level – MEO Class I (Diesel Engine Combustion Gas Simulator) is an intensive 3-day programme totalling 18 hours (approximately 3 hours of short theory/pre-briefs and 15 hours of hands-on simulator practice), organised into three modules:

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate familiarity with engine-room plant arrangements, instrumentation, alarm systems and controls used on modern merchant ships.
- Pre-plan engine room startup and operation using checklists and appropriate timescales.
- Identify and troubleshoot common operational problems and abnormal conditions in propulsion plant.
- Make logical operational decisions that promote safety and prevent escalation.
- Assess propulsion plant performance, monitor surveillance parameters and maintain safe operation.
- Simulate and determine best Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC) for a specified load and fuel type using combustion-gas simulation tools.
- Operate effectively under heavy-weather running conditions and apply corrective measures to preserve propulsion safety and efficiency.

Batch Strength Policy
As per D G Shipping Training Circular No 4 of 2028 MTI’s are directed not to conduct any batch, if the batch strength is less than 25% of the approved intake capacity granted by the Directorate.

- Module 1: Module 1 — Familiarisation (Total theory 0.5 hr; Simulation 1.0 hr)
- Module 2: Module 2 — Propulsive characteristics of main diesel engine (Theory 1.0 hr; Simulation 10.0 hrs total across submodules)
- Module 3: Module 3 — Computer-based Diesel Engine Combustion Gas Monitor Simulation (Theory 1.0 hr; Simulation 4.0 hrs)
Mandatory Requirements
- Minimum 12 months sea service as 2nd Officer after obtaining MEO Class-II CoC issued or recognized by Govt of India are eligible for the course
